This place was also known as “Leyte” by English sailors. Who landed here for supplies before proceeding further northward toward Manila. Where they met with Spanish soldiers led by Governor-General José Basco y Vargas y Nufreida. Who were hostile towards foreigners entering their territory without permission from Spain’s King Fernando VII himself — but alas this did not stop them from taking over Manila later that year instead!
